Trans - States: The art of crossing over (Conference Promo 2016) by Cavan McLaughlin
Trans- States: The art of crossing over (conference promo 2016) from Cavan McLaughlin on Vimeo.
trans- prefix meaning: across, beyond, through, on the other side of, to go beyond
state: a condition or way of being that exists at a particular time
An unabashed play on words, a trans- state is, among other things, a coincidentia oppositorum. An alchemical wedding that defines the fixed place, where boundaries are actively transgressed. In many ways, this very undertaking is where the role of the magician, mystic and artist collide. Down at the crossroads, where possibilities are collapsed into actualities, by the wondrous act of a conscious decision: there lies the place of suffering and surrender; of realisation and redemption.
This event was a transdisciplinary conference that explored representations in contemporary visual culture of boundary crossing, liminality and queerification with specific reference to occultism, mysticism, shamanism and other esoteric and spiritual practices.
The proceedings was hosted by the University of Northampton and featured academics, independent scholars, practitioners and artists.
A couple of shots from the exhibition featuring the painting 'Excarnation' 2015. Lovely!

Trans Vex Exhibition Events - Life Drawing Projected Images
![]() |
| Photo by Pauline Wood |
This life drawing session was a themed event relating to the exhibition Trans Vex.
A key method for many artists has been to project an image and trace the result and all the paintings in this show have had the original images projected and painted as part of a process.
This life drawing session used projected patterns and images on to the model to create interesting and dynamic poses to draw.

Cock and Bull Story Album by Pillock Cover Art
We were thrilled to recently find out Pillock wanted to use a life drawing for their album 'Cock and Bull Story'! Obviously we said yes as we love to see our art spread further afield and gain new meanings and interpretations.
The life drawing was from a session including a minotaur's head prop. Great album from these guys based in Hungary and the UK. You can hear and purchase the album here!
