Trans Vex Exhibition at Intercession Printmaking Studio and Gallery
Intercession Printmaking Studio and Gallery's inaugural exhibition Trans Vex an expanded print exhibition by Alexander Small.
The Trans Vex exhibition will open on 20th October 6pm to 9pm and continue until 6th November opening Thursday to Sunday 12 until 6 or by appointment.
Intercession Printmaking Studio and Gallery
The Tower
54 Kingswell Street
Northampton
NN1 1PR
Trans - Vex refers to trans meaning across and vex meaning to annoy, trouble or disturb.
The trans being the act of translating historic images particularly pre and early modern print imagery to a different medium that of paint. This methodology is an absurd act in itself, to paint a printed image really labours its material qualities.
This coupled with the themes of the images taking their cues from the essay 'Toward a metaphysics of shit' (2002) by Jean Fisher lead to an exploration of the idea of the trickster to trouble and annoy in a way to renew and affirm life.

A Thousand Pent Passions 2015
A Thousand Pent Passions 2015 from Alexander Small on Vimeo.
One from the archive a short version of this traumatic video 'A Thousand Spent Passions' I made last year, some of you may remember it from the 'P/ss/ng into the Wind' exhibition. Jonathan Alibone pointed out a nice quote from the book Forests: The Shadow of Civilization by Robert Pogue Harrison which reminded me of this piece.
'All becomes indefinite in the Dionysian frenzy, for Dionysus [...] liquidates the boundaries of form.'

Trans - States Conference Art Works Selected
Part of the #transvex Kickstarter project is showing some work at the Trans - States Conference in September.
There are a lot of speakers involved including academics, practitioners and artists and the conference is about;
'This is a transdisciplinary conference that will explore representations in contemporary visual culture of boundary crossing, liminality and queerification with specific reference to occultism, mysticism, shamanism and other esoteric and spiritual practices.'
Part of the conference is a curated show and we now have the finalised selection of art works for it which include!
The metaphysics of shit : A selection of recent paintings
Referring to Jean Fischer’s 2002 essay ‘Towards a Metaphysics of Shit’ this series of paintings examine ideas of the trickster not only as a potent symbol of the liminal state but also as a method for realising its re-creative potential. Using historic images as a starting point particularly images from European wood block print imagery portraying themes of defecation, time and de-individuation these images are re-presented as paintings. This process of translating the image from one media to another is an absurd act in itself, mocking both systems of representation known as painting and print.
Generally Alexander’s work occupies the space between ideas of the Dionysian and the Absurd, moving from one to the other exploring themes of futility, pointlessness, hopelessness, nuisance, de individuation, death, rebirth and the irrational.
